Helping Anxious Children Receive the Care They Need
For some children, the thought of a dental procedure can bring real anxiety, and for others, certain treatments are simply easier to complete when they are calm and relaxed. Dental sedation is a safe and effective way to help your child feel at ease, so they can receive the care they need without fear or stress. At Just for Kids Dentistry, we offer several sedation options, including inhaled, oral, and IV sedation, allowing us to tailor the approach to your child's age, needs, anxiety level, and treatment plan.
Your child's safety is always our highest priority. Throughout every procedure, our skilled team monitors your child closely, watching over their comfort and well-being at all times. Dr. Preece will help you understand which option is the best fit for your child and will gladly answer every question you have, so you feel fully informed and confident. Whether your child needs a little help relaxing or a deeper level of sedation for more involved treatment, we have safe, proven options to make their experience a positive one.
Talk to Us About Sedation
When Dental Sedation May Be Recommended
Sedation is not needed for every child or every visit, but in the right situations, it can make a meaningful difference. It helps children who feel too anxious to sit comfortably through treatment, and it can make longer or more complex procedures far easier on a young patient. By keeping your child calm and still, sedation also allows Dr. Preece to work safely and efficiently, often completing care more smoothly than would otherwise be possible.
Dental sedation may be a helpful option for children who:
- Feel significant fear or anxiety about dental treatment
- Are very young and find it hard to sit still for care
- Have special healthcare needs that make treatment challenging
- Need a longer or more involved procedure
- Have a strong gag reflex that complicates treatment
- Struggle to feel comfortable in the dental chair
Our Sedation Options
- Nitrous Oxide - Often called laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a safe, non-addictive gas administered through a small breathing mask. It helps your child relax while remaining fully conscious and keeping their natural reflexes. Once the mask is removed and normal breathing resumes, the gas is quickly eliminated from the body, so your child returns to normal soon after. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes nitrous oxide as a very safe and effective technique for treating children's dental needs, making it a wonderful option for easing mild anxiety.
- Oral Sedation - Oral sedation is often recommended for very young children and those with special healthcare needs. With this method, your child may become quite drowsy or even drift off to sleep, but full consciousness is maintained throughout. Dr. Preece will prescribe the specific medication best suited to your child's overall health and dental treatment plan and will happily answer any questions you have about how it works and what to expect.
- IV Sedation - For children who would be better served by a deeper level of sedation, IV sedation offers unconscious sedation administered by our fully qualified team. During the procedure, Dr. Preece performs the dental treatment in our office while your child is carefully monitored by an anesthesiologist, ensuring the highest level of safety and oversight throughout. This option can be ideal for more involved treatment or for children for whom other methods are not the right fit.

Safety Is Always First
We understand that the idea of sedation can feel like a big decision, and we want you to feel completely at ease with it. Every sedation option we offer is safe, well-established, and used widely in pediatric dentistry. More importantly, we surround every sedated procedure with careful oversight. Our skilled team monitors your child closely from start to finish, keeping a constant watch on their comfort and wellbeing, and for IV sedation, a dedicated anesthesiologist oversees your child throughout.
Before any sedation, Dr. Preece reviews your child's health history and discusses the plan with you in detail, choosing the option best matched to your child's needs. We will also give you clear instructions to follow beforehand and afterward, so you know exactly how to prepare and what to expect. Your child's safety guides every decision we make, and we will never move forward until you feel informed and comfortable.
